Business growth – is that what I should be striving for?
Grow your business, scale your business, fast growth strategies, build a $1M+ business … I seem to be bombarded by these message from every direction, and just like the lights of Times Square, they’re mesmerising and exciting and I wanted to be a part of it!
So I jumped on that business growth speed train going at 300km/h, and started to take in the sights all around me. At first it was exciting with so much to see and take in. But with every turn there was a change in countryside and a different strategy to follow. Soon the images became a blur, the noise was overwhelming, and I just wanted to get off the train!
So in a crisis of confidence, one morning after a couple of particularly bumpy stretches of track, I threw my hands in the air, proclaimed it was all too hard, and considered having a PJs and Netflix day … for the next 365 days!
For the next three days I went round and round in my head with different strategies I could adopt to just make all the noise stop and take me back to a simpler time when my train-of-one was slowly meandering through the country side, where daisies were growing and bunnies were hopping.
So I wondered – do we really need to build an empire? Or our version of one? I asked the question on a couple of business forums and not only did I get some great responses, I realised I wasn’t alone! Here’s a couple of my favourites.
This made me realise a few things about my business:
- Good team members are difficult to find, and I have some amazing women working with me.
- Great clients are hard to find and I have many clients who I love working with and have been for a number of years.
- I’m surrounded by many wonderful people in business who are all striving for their own version of business success, and happy to offer advice or be a listening ear when needed.
- Five years ago I wanted my business to be exactly where it is now.
So here’s my top tips if you’re struggling with the business growth concept:
- Business growth means something different for everyone. There’s no right or wrong, just what’s right for you and your business.
- Surround yourself with positive people who can pick you up when you’ve stumbled, but also be there to offer some hard truths – not just the warm and fluffies that are going to make us feel good when we’ve had a bad week.
- Take a moment to breathe, step back, and visualise what it is that you really want. Maybe you’re heading in the wrong direction? Maybe you’re right on track? Or maybe you’ve already reached your destination!
What’s next in my business growth journey?
- Jump off the speed train, reduce the noise, take notice of the messages that are relevant to me and block out the rest.
- Revisit my strategic plan and realign it with my goals and vision.
- Take some time to show appreciation to my team and clients, colleagues and family.
